In a recent conversation with certain friends of mine about films, I realised not a lot of them knew about PROPER romance films- none of this soppy Dear John/Twilight rubbish, I'm talking Say Anything's John Cusack standing outside with a boom box playing 'In Your Eyes' to Diane Court. So I thought I need to do a post for people to see great romantic films that aren't involving Zac Effron washing a car etc etc.
Just so you know, I'm actually not a one for Romances, I find it quite difficult to keep a straight face in a serious emotional moment on screen (is it just me?) and many a time I have been told off or 'shh'-ed by another member of the audience for having the giggles. I find the a lot of the stories awkward, unbelievable (don't start with me on this argument of 'it is fictional') and quite frankly a little bit sickening. Do people genuinely think that Edward Cullen being what, 100 years old is ok to pursue an 18 year old? Personally, I think it is giving out the wrong message, and is also incredibly creepy. But anyway, I don't go in for the weird intense romantic drivvle which society seems to be obsessed with, so within this list the characters might not stay together and will probably not be the love of each others lives.
Anyway, this is just a few I thought were a good starting point...
I mentioned before Say Anything which is a great 80's film staring John Cusack and Ione Skye based in their high school years. John Cusack persuades Ione Skye to date him and realises how much of a nice guy he is (he really is such a nice boy) but then problems arise and they both end up in a bit of a pickle. This film is just a nice teenage-love film which has some adorable lines in! It is definitely worth the watch!
Gone with the Wind- my god it is fantastic, not only as a romance film but just amazing to watch. I was about 10 minutes into it and had decided it was my favourite film of all time. Made in 1939, it is an old film but don't hold it against it! The film is about a spoilt girl, Scarlett O'hara played by Vivian Leigh, who is one of my favourite actresses of all time, and her life in the American south where she pursues Ashleigh Wilkes but never ends up with him. It really is a fantastic film and considered a great classic!
Next up is Breakfast at Tiffany's- I'm sure a lot of people will have seen it. I love Audrey Hepburn which was one of the main reasons to see it, but I also fell in love with the story. It is a classic style romance with it ending in a big kiss, but seeing how Holly's cooky lifestyle plays out is just great! Again, it is one of my all time favourites!
A more of a modern film to see: 500 Days of Summer- Not only do I love the cast, I love the whole concept of it, showing the trials of 'love' and mainly about the break up. I love the way its filmed and it is a bit up and down, but you feel really involved with their relationship!
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
